Producers Michael Birnbaum (John Tucker Must Die) and director Jeremiah Chechik (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation) have optioned the rights to the House of Night series, Variety says.
The books (there's 4 of them so far, with 5 more planned) takes place in a world where vampires and humans have co-existed for a long time, and "vampyres" only find out about their true nature when they hit puberty. That's when they have to go to a Hogwarts-like school called House of Night to hone their vampiric skills. The series follows the school years of newly vampyre Zoey Redbird. Yeah, it sounds pretty similar to Harry Potter, at least in its starting premise. Here's the Wikipedia entry.
If this adaptation becomes successful and they make nine movies out of it (or at least three), that would support my theory that vampires are the new superheroes. I'm going to wager that we'll hear at least two more movie or TV announcements with vampires in them in the next three months. Come one, come all, I guess.
