West Memphis Police Search for Group of Armed Robbers

West Memphis, AR -- Within minutes West Memphis Police say three masked armed robbers snatched cash from the Big Star Grocery store on East Broadway last Friday, November 28, 2008. Investigators believe the same trio held up the 7th Street Food Mart two days earlier.

No one at either business was willing to talk when our Eyewitness News crew stopped by the stores. Harvey Johnson works next door to the 7th Street Food Mart and went by to check on his neighbors after the robbery. He says the owner told him, "three suspects came in. All was armed and demanded money. He had his nephew with him so he had to submit." It's a move police say may have lost him money but saved their lives.

Johnson says since the stick-ups he's been keeping a closer eye on his surroundings. "People that look like they casing the place, look like they ain't really got no business loafing and loitering."

Johnson says these days it seems anyone can be a target if a robber gets the urge to strike. Johnson says, "Idle minds. They really ain't got anything to do. Those idle minds. They just rob. We short of jobs...the economy and then it’s the holidays. That’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes."

West Memphis Police say they have no information that connects the robbery at Big Star Grocery and 7th Street Food Mart to the armed robbery at Southland Gaming and Racing back on November 7, 2008.

All three robberies remain unsolved. If you have any information contact Crittenden County Crime Stoppers at (870) 732-4444.
