Theater company raises more funds

ST. GEORGE - "Money isn't everything, but it sure is nice to have when you want to make improvements to your program," said Alfie Deming, founder and artistic director for the SunRiver St. George Class Act Senior Theatre Company.

With their first successful year of free productions to use as a model for future seasons, those involved in the senior theatre company planned a benefit performance to raise funds for equipment.

"The community center ballroom has only four remote microphones and no following remote spot light. ... Budget cuts in 2009 mean there are no funds available to upgrade," Demins said. " ... Our ability to find shows which use less than four microphones is limited. We have been saving our donations for more than a year and are committed to purchasing our own sound system. We have a little over $3,000 in the bank, but still need another $3,000."

The Class Act's benefit concert was on Monday at the SunRiver St. George Community Center.

Class Act's founder has no desire to become a major theater company in the area.

"We just want to be good enough to draw patrons to our productions and give older actors a chance to play lead roles, but we don't want to compete with other live theater in the area," he said. Although he has opened certain shows to actors from outside the active adult community, "we want to stay small and continue to develop an ensemble of actors from among our SunRiver neighbors who can produce any kind of show - including drama, musical, comedy, variety, whatever."

Class Act's 2009 productions include Broadway music from "My Fair Lady" Feb. 16 to 20; five nights of 1940's Radio Shows on March 23 to 27; and "Twelve Angry Citizens" on April 20 to 24. The final production of the 2009 season is "A Bag Full of Miracles" on May 18 to 22.

For more information about Class Act Senior Theatre Company or about upcoming productions, call Alfie Deming at 229-9310.

New novel says follow your dreams

ST. GEORGE - When reading historical fiction, the reader feels transported to another time and place. You can go on an adventure, learn about history, feel intrigued by courageous men and women, or fall in love all over again. "Jenny's Dream" is one such novel, where dreams can come true.

Author Linda Weaver Clarke travels throughout the United States, teaching a "Family Legacy Workshop," encouraging others to turn their family history and autobiography into a variety of interesting stories.

In Clarke's book, Jenny Roberts is home from college and feeling restless. She has dreams of becoming a writer and wants to pursue it. When her kindred friend, Will, asks her what her outlook on life is, she answers, "Dreams are an important part of life, and without them, life would be so dull. If we can envision it, then I believe it can be accomplished."

Jenny's dreams also include falling in love. She feels that one day she will find a man to love, the "prince of her dreams." As the summer passes, Jenny begins to recognize her true feelings for Will. When she realizes that he means more to her than a kindred friend, she must now choose between a career and romance. The only thing standing in her way is an unpleasant memory from her past, which has haunted her since childhood.

She must learn to forgive before she can choose which dream to follow. This book is about the miracle of forgiveness.

"Jenny's Dream" is the story of a young girl's desire to become a writer and how she finds love and forgiveness, with the legend of Old Ephraim as the subplot.
