The Richmond Hill Wildcats didn't earn style points Saturday afternoon, but who's keeping track?
The only aspect that mattered was another win for the Wildcats, who remained perfect on the season with a 48-43 victory over Savannah Country Day.
Richmond Hill raised its record to 6-0 this season after combining to win just nine games during the last two seasons.
"One year of experience and a couple of new players has made the difference," 'Cats coach William Altman said.
One of the newcomers, sophomore point guard Lorenzo Moss, poured in a game-high 14 points.
George Greig added 13 points and Chakiris Moss had 10.
Will King led SCD with 11.
Moss sealed the victory by sinking two free throws with 10.6 seconds left and Richmond Hill clinging to a 45-43 lead.
C.J. Bynum hit two free throws with one minute and 10 seconds left to put the Wildcats in the lead. Bynum added another free throw with 1.2 seconds left for the final margin.
Altman credited the Hornets' zone defense for holding his team 15 points under its season average.
"This was the first game we've seen a lot of zone (defense)," Altman said. "The zone slows you down. We're more of an uptempto team."
SCD (3-4) tied the game at 43-43 on Will Stewart's 3-pointer with one minute and 49 seconds remaining, but didn't score the rest of the way.
"We're young and we've had some injuries," Hornets coach Travis Priddy said. "There are no excuses, but they take a toll on a small school."
During SCD's four-game losing streak, the squad has had to play without last season's first-team, all-region player David Toraya, out with an illness.
In the first quarter Saturday, the Hornets lost starting guard Travis Jaudon, who injured his wrist.
Country Day jumped to a 13-8 first quarter lead behind six of Morgan Clemm's eight points in the game.
But the Wildcats embarked on an 11-0 spurt between the first and second quarters.
SCD held the five-point advantage, heading to the final three minutes of the half, but a 3-pointer by Bynum began a run of nine straight Richmond Hill points and the Wildcats led 28-24.
The 'Cats' held their biggest lead of the game, six, twice after baskets by Greig in the third quarter.
